Questions for Drum Studio Set-Up

Post by Ronniedawg »

Thinking about pulling the trigger on the eDRUMin 10 interface for my new recording studio and made a list of various components for the set-up on my six piece acoustic drums. Your thoughts are appreciated.

Yes, I’m heading into some uncharted waters (kinda).

My recording set up consideration as follows:
1). Connecting via USB direct on computer to computer port with Windows 10 O/S
2). Have both Superior Drummer 3 and EZ Drummer 3 as host
3). Utilizing Pro Tools Ultimate 2023
4). Considering Roland triggers x5 - RT-30K | RT-30HR | RT-30H
5). Considering Lemon Cymbals x4
6). Thinking rTom mesh heads - for low volume
7). Have Zoom L-20 Interface
8). Leaving hi-hat mic’d - recording old school with the hats

Hi,

I am thinking of buying an Audiofront interface (eDrumin 8) for my Roland triggers.

How did this go for you? I assume it'd work fine, but my knowledge is lacking.

@ronniedawg - Your plan/list should work OK in the studio where a big issue is - will acoustic drummers be comfortable on the kit?

I think in some situations your drummers will want all the cymbals to be acoustic. If you ever decided to go to edrum hi-hats the Lemon 14" kit works well with the eDRUMin and Superior Drummer 3 combination. You'll need a regular good quality stand for it.

The usual approach for acoustic to edrum conversions is to install cones inside the shell and Roland type mesh heads but I've heard the Roland external triggers work well.
EDIT - some forum members on vdrums.com think the Roland external triggers might have issues with mesh heads.

Another important component is the headphones - need to be closed over the ear isolating type so the drummer hears the Superior Drummer hits in his monitor feed.

Your computer and USB audio interface should support 128 or smaller buffer size depending on the drummer's sensitivity to latency - I run 64 buffers. This is just for tracking, when mixing you can go much higher.
