MIDI Expression 2.6 BETA is available

Post by Rob »

I’m extremely pleased to announce the availability of MIDI Expression 2.6 software, including updates to device firmware and the Control Application. It is now available as a Public BETA from the downloads section.

This version finally brings the Control Application to iOS, and also packs some great new features and improvements. To take advantages of the new features or use the iOS version of the Control Application, the firmware for your device(s) must be updated using the firmware updater integrated into the Control Application.

MIDI Expression Control on iOS
Devices with firmware version 2.6 and up can now be controlled with the iOS version of the Control Application, which is currently available as TestFlight app.

The iOS version is quite versatile, allowing you to control MIDI Expression devices that are directly plugged into an iPhone or iPad with a Camera Connection Kit, connected via Network MIDI, or in the case the MIDI Expression iO, connected with standard MIDI Cables. This also means that daisy chained devices can also be controlled.

New Features
The new features in this release focus on the “Effects Processor” which was previously called the “Global Channel”. Version 2.5 allowed for Incrementing and decrementing the MIDI channel with a sustain pedal, and in version 2.6 a ‘linked’ mode is included for use with footswitches.

In addition, there is now a “Channel Jump” mode that lets you temporally switch to a different channel when a pedal is pressed, and back to the previous channel when released. The goal is to let a pedal act as a modifier to change the function of other pedals or the keys on a connected MIDI keyboard. This feature was developed with Ableton Live in mind, and look for an upcoming video tutorial.

Lastly, I’ve added a “Transpose” setting to the MIDI Effects processor. Using the “Transpose” mode, a pedal can be used to toggle learning the transpose setting by pressing a note on a connected MIDI keyboard.

Improvements
Someone on the forum asked if the Min and Max controls for the Expression Curve could show percentage values. That has been implemented and by right-clicking on the MIN or MAX controls switches between using percentages and 0-127 values.

Bug Fixes
On Windows, an issue that could prevent the Control Application window from being visible if it was previously close when it was minimized has been fixed.

Issues with forwarding sysEx messages from MIDI In Din -> MIDI Out Din and USB MIDI In -> USB MIDI Out have also been fixed.

Enjoy,
Rob
